Northern Ireland becomes first in UK to offer 24/7 thrombectomy service

Northern Ireland has become the first part of the UK to provide a 24-hour thrombectomy service for its entire population, with the regional service operating from the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Health Minister Robbie Butler confirmed the expansion during a visit to the hospital’s stroke unit, where he met patients and specialist staff delivering the service.

The service previously operated between 8am and 5pm seven days a week, meaning the time at which a stroke occurred could affect a patient’s access to the potentially life-changing treatment.

It is now available around the clock.

£5 million investment in stroke treatment

The expanded service began operating on 14 September and has since been tested through real patient care, with patients already receiving treatment during the newly available overnight hours.

The expansion has been supported by £5 million of Executive Programme for Government elective-care funding.

Thrombectomy can be used in some cases of ischaemic stroke to remove a blood clot and restore blood flow to the brain, potentially improving a patient’s neurological recovery.

Minister Butler described the expansion as a landmark moment for stroke care and said Northern Ireland was leading the UK by providing the service around the clock for the entire population.

The thrombectomy service is delivered at the Royal Victoria Hospital through a regional pathway involving stroke teams at Causeway, Antrim Area, Royal Victoria, Ulster, Craigavon Area, Daisy Hill, Altnagelvin and South West Acute hospitals.

Artificial-intelligence-supported imaging is also being used to help clinicians rapidly identify patients who may benefit from thrombectomy.

The investment is increasing specialist workforce capacity and providing additional support to the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

The Department of Health says there are more than 43,000 stroke survivors living in Northern Ireland.
