Michael O’Neill’s side had a golden opportunity to take all three points when Isaac Price stepped up to take a late penalty, but Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili produced the save to ensure the sides finished 0-0.

The result leaves Northern Ireland unbeaten after four matches in League B Group 2, with another clean sheet maintaining their impressive defensive record.

Northern Ireland push for breakthrough

Northern Ireland entered the game on the back of an impressive 3-0 victory over Ukraine in Slovakia and began brightly as they looked to complete a second win over Georgia during the current Nations League campaign.

Georgia carried a threat of their own and Pierce Charles was called into action during the first half, producing a save to deny Zuriko Davitashvili.

At the other end, Northern Ireland continued to probe for an opening, with Patrick Kelly getting into a promising position before his attempted cut-back was cleared.

Tom Atcheson also appealed for a penalty shortly before half-time after going down inside the area, but play continued.

The teams went into the interval with the score still goalless.

Price denied from the penalty spot

The decisive moment arrived late in the second half as Northern Ireland piled pressure on the Georgian defence.

Josh Magennis was denied by Mamardashvili before Ruairi McConville headed against the crossbar during a goalmouth scramble.

Following a VAR review, Northern Ireland were awarded a penalty.

Price stepped forward in the 84th minute with the opportunity to put the hosts ahead, but Mamardashvili guessed correctly and saved the midfielder’s spot-kick.

Northern Ireland continued to search for a winner during the closing stages but could not find a way through, leaving the points shared at Windsor Park.

Four games without conceding

While there was disappointment at not securing another victory, Northern Ireland have now kept four consecutive clean sheets in the Nations League.

O’Neill’s side have yet to concede in Group B2 and remain at the top of the standings following the conclusion of a demanding four-match international window.

Northern Ireland had previously beaten Georgia 1-0 in Tbilisi before drawing 0-0 with Hungary in Belfast and recording their emphatic 3-0 victory over Ukraine.

Monday night’s draw therefore leaves Northern Ireland well placed as attention turns towards the remaining Nations League fixtures.
