NIFL weekend preview: Coleraine host Glentoran as league action resumes

The NIFL weekend preview is led by Friday night’s meeting between Premiership leaders Coleraine and Glentoran, while Linfield will look to keep pace at the top when they host Dungannon Swifts on Saturday.
Two Championship fixtures have been postponed: Newington v H&W Welders on Friday and Dundela v Warrenpoint Town on Saturday. The remaining games are scheduled to go ahead, but supporters should check for any late updates before travelling.
Coleraine and Linfield set the pace
Coleraine welcome Glentoran to the Showgrounds on Friday, with kick-off at 7.45pm. The Bannsiders start the weekend top of the Premiership on 34 points, two ahead of Linfield, and arrive after a 5-0 win over Crusaders.
Glentoran are fourth on 20 points and will be under new manager Duncan Ferguson for the first time in league action. The match is scheduled for live coverage on BBC Sport NI, adding extra attention to a meeting with an early-season top-of-the-table feel.
Larne host Portadown at Inver Park at the same time. Larne are third with games in hand on the sides above them, but were held to a 1-1 draw by Limavady United on Tuesday. Portadown are 11th and will be looking to build on a competitive 2-1 defeat by Linfield last weekend.
Saturday’s Premiership fixtures
Linfield, who beat Portadown 2-1 in their last league outing, welcome Dungannon Swifts to Windsor Park at 3pm. The Blues have a chance to put pressure on Coleraine, while Dungannon will aim to respond after a 3-1 home defeat by Cliftonville.
Cliftonville host Carrick Rangers at Solitude. The Reds returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory at Dungannon, while Carrick drew 1-1 with Limavady. Carrick sit fifth, two places and three points above Cliftonville, making this one of the weekend’s more closely matched contests.
Limavady welcome Crusaders, with both teams seeking a response after draws last time out for the Roesiders and a heavy defeat for Crusaders. Ballymena United host Bangor in the other Premiership fixture. Ballymena have games in hand, while Bangor remain bottom and need points to improve their position.
Annagh lead the Championship
Annagh United travel to Loughgall on Saturday, looking to protect their two-point lead at the top of the Championship. Annagh have 28 points from 13 games and head to Lakeview Park after a 5-1 win over Queen’s University. Loughgall are ninth, but have shown they can make life difficult for teams around them.
Glenavon, third with games in hand, visit Queen’s University. Ballinamallard United, fourth, host bottom side Armagh City, while Ards meet Newry City and Institute play Moyola Park.
Friday’s remaining Championship match sees Rathfriland Rangers host Strabane Athletic at 7.45pm. Both sides will be looking to take points from a fixture with implications near the lower end of the table.
Newington’s home game against H&W Welders and Dundela’s meeting with Warrenpoint Town are listed as postponed. Their rearranged dates had not been confirmed in the latest fixture listings.
Weather watch for supporters
The forecast points to showers in parts of Northern Ireland on Saturday, including Belfast and the north coast. There is no indication in the latest league fixture list that weather has caused the remaining postponements, but conditions and pitch inspections can change. Check club and NIFL updates before setting out.
