Households do not need to apply for the payment and the scheme is not means-tested or based on how much electricity a household uses.

Electricity suppliers will automatically apply the support to eligible domestic electricity accounts from Tuesday.

For households paying by bill, the support will be credited directly to their electricity account.

The Department for the Economy says the support will appear on bills as “NIRO & VAT Govt Credit”.

Pre-pay and keypad customers will receive the £63 credit when they next top up, with the support applied automatically at the meter.

No forms or applications are required.

Who is eligible for the £63 electricity support?

Eligibility for the 2026 payment is determined using information held by NIE Networks as of 4 October.

The scheme applies to eligible domestic electricity accounts, including both bill-paying and pre-pay customers.

It is not means-tested and the amount received does not depend on electricity consumption or the value of a customer’s normal top-up.

Businesses are not eligible for the scheme.

Around 860,000 households across Northern Ireland are expected to benefit.

Why are households receiving £63?

The £63 payment combines two elements of government support for electricity costs.

Treasury previously approved £85.4 million over three years to fund 75% of the domestic cost of the Northern Ireland Renewables Obligation.

Further funding was subsequently secured after the British Government announced a temporary reduction in VAT on domestic electricity supplies in Great Britain from 5% to 0% for six months.

As that VAT measure could not be implemented in Northern Ireland in the same way from October, an alternative arrangement was developed to provide comparable support.

The two elements have been combined into a single payment for Northern Ireland households this year.

Total funding for the scheme in 2026 is estimated at £53 million.

Electricity discount will continue in 2027 and 2028

The Household Electricity Discount Scheme is set to run for three years.

Further electricity discounts are planned for eligible households in 2027 and 2028.

However, the amount households will receive in those years has not yet been confirmed.

The Department for the Economy says the value of each future discount will be announced before it is applied.

Archibald says no application is required

Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald said the support would provide some help to households as winter approaches and energy bills rise.

She stressed that customers do not have to take any action to receive the discount.

Archibald has also suggested that people who feel they do not need the financial support could consider donating an equivalent amount to a fuel poverty charity.

The scheme comes amid continuing pressure on household finances from energy, fuel and other living costs across Northern Ireland.
