Justice Minister Naomi Long attended an event at Stormont on Thursday, 24 September, alongside representatives of ASSIST NI, the PSNI, the Rowan Sexual Assault Referral Centre and other support organisations. The event heard from a person with lived experience of domestic abuse and from professionals involved in providing support.

Advocacy helps victims understand their options, access services and have their views heard. Long also highlighted the development of dedicated advocacy for children and young people, saying their circumstances and needs must be recognised in the support available to them.

The Minister said the department would continue working with statutory agencies and community organisations to improve the response to domestic and sexual abuse.

The Department of Justice announcement did not provide figures for the number of people supported over the five years or announce new funding. Those would be useful questions for a follow-up with ASSIST NI.
