Almost 70% of Northern Ireland house fire victims lived alone, NIFRS reveals
Almost 70% of people who died in house fires across Northern Ireland over a ten-year period lived alone, according to new figures released by the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service.

Between 2015 and 2025, 89 people lost their lives in house fires, with 62 of those victims living alone.
The figures have been published as Fire Safety Week 2026 gets underway, with firefighters urging people to recognise potential dangers in their homes and check on vulnerable relatives, friends and neighbours.
Smoking materials linked to 38 deaths
NIFRS revealed that smoking materials were associated with 38 of the fatalities recorded between 2015 and 2025.
Wiring, cabling and plugs were associated with 15 deaths, while heaters and open fires were linked to nine.
Three people have died in house fires so far during 2026.
Smoking materials were associated with two of those deaths, while an electrical source was associated with the third.
Firefighters urge public to check on vulnerable people
This year’s Fire Safety Week campaign is encouraging people to recognise risks in their homes and consider those who may need additional support.
NIFRS Assistant Chief Fire & Rescue Officer Marcus Wright highlighted the increased vulnerability of people living alone, those with disabilities and individuals with reduced mobility.
He also warned that although most accidental house fires begin in kitchens, bedrooms account for the greatest number of fatalities.
Free home fire safety checks available
NIFRS is encouraging households to complete its free online Home Fire Safety Check.
The assessment takes approximately 15 minutes and provides tailored advice.
People identified as being at greater risk may be referred for an in-person visit from NIFRS personnel.
Firefighters are also reminding residents to test smoke alarms regularly, consider additional alarms in bedrooms and living rooms, and ensure suitable heat alarms are installed in kitchens.
