£600,000 Tates Avenue resurfacing scheme announced for South Belfast

A £600,000 resurfacing scheme is set to begin on Tates Avenue in South Belfast next week, with motorists being warned to expect road closures and delays during the works.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins announced the investment today, Thursday 17 September, with preliminary work due to begin on Monday 21 September.

The scheme will cover approximately 880 metres of Tates Avenue between the Lisburn Road and Boucher Road. 

Weekend road closures planned

The main resurfacing work will be carried out over two weekends in October.

The first period of resurfacing is scheduled to take place from Friday 2 October until Monday 5 October, with further work planned for Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October.

Road closures will be required during both periods.

A diversion will operate via Lisburn Road, Stockmans Lane and Boucher Road, while the Department for Infrastructure says local access for residents and businesses will be maintained where practicable. 

Drivers warned to expect delays

Temporary lane restrictions and other traffic management measures will also be required while the scheme is being completed.

Motorists have been advised to allow additional time for journeys through the area and to follow temporary traffic arrangements.

The Department said the works have been planned in an effort to minimise disruption, although it warned that some delays may be unavoidable. 

£600,000 investment

Announcing the scheme, Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins described the project as a substantial investment for Belfast and said it would benefit residents, businesses and other road users.

She said maintaining the road network helps provide safer and more comfortable journeys and that the resurfacing would help Tates Avenue continue serving the local community in the years ahead. 

Work expected to finish in October

The scheme is expected to be substantially completed by Thursday 22 October, although the timetable is dependent on favourable weather conditions.

The announcement comes a week after the Department confirmed a separate £557,000 resurfacing scheme for York Street in North Belfast, meaning more than £1.15 million has recently been announced for the two Belfast road schemes.
