Belfast Council approves 65 new homes and Lidl supermarket in Dunmurry
Belfast City Council has approved plans for 65 new homes across two developments in west Belfast, alongside proposals for a new Lidl supermarket in Dunmurry.

The decisions were made by the council’s Planning Committee on Tuesday 13 October 2026 and announced the following day.
The housing schemes include 36 social housing apartments near the Monagh By-pass and 29 homes close to Mount Eagles, while the supermarket development will involve demolishing existing commercial premises on Kingsway.
36 social housing apartments near Monagh By-pass
The first approved development is located on land south-west of the Monagh By-pass and north-west of Black Ridge Gardens.
The mixed-use scheme will provide two three-storey apartment buildings containing 36 social housing units for people aged over 55.
The development will also include seven business or light industrial units, along with access roads, car parking, landscaping and associated site works.
The plans will see the land used for a combination of residential accommodation and employment space.
Further 29 homes approved near Mount Eagles
A second housing development has been approved on land north of Barnfield Road and south of Mount Eagles Avenue.
The scheme will provide 29 homes, including six affordable properties.
Plans also include car parking, private and communal outdoor space, landscaping and access arrangements from Mount Eagles Avenue.
Together, the two developments will provide 65 additional homes in west Belfast, including social and affordable housing.
New Lidl supermarket approved for Dunmurry
The Planning Committee has also approved plans for a new Lidl supermarket on Kingsway in Dunmurry.
The proposed store will have a floor area of approximately 2,300 square metres and will replace existing commercial premises currently occupied by a Tesco supermarket and five smaller retail units.
The development will involve demolishing the existing buildings, changing the car parking layout and altering access arrangements from Dunmurry Lane.
Landscaping and other associated site works are also included in the plans.
The council has not announced a construction timetable or opening date for the new supermarket.
Former School of Music building to be refurbished
In a separate decision, the Planning Committee approved alterations and refurbishment works at the former City of Belfast School of Music building at 99 Donegall Pass.
The proposals include improvements to the existing building and the construction of a new lift within an external courtyard.
Council welcomes housing and retail investment
Councillor Ryan Murphy, Chair of Belfast City Council’s Planning Committee, welcomed the approvals, highlighting the provision of additional housing and investment in the local economy.
He said the developments supported the objectives of the Belfast Agenda, the council’s community plan, by helping to meet housing needs while supporting economic activity.
The decisions represent further planned investment in residential and retail development across west and south Belfast.
