£425,000 Belfast cycling scheme to begin on Durham Street on Monday

Work on a £425,000 cycling scheme on Durham Street and College Square North is due to begin on Monday 28 September, with a temporary one-way closure affecting northbound traffic during construction.

The Department for Infrastructure says the project will upgrade existing facilities to create a two-way protected cycle lane. It will link cycling improvements completed around Belfast Grand Central Station with College Street on the northern side of the city centre.

Northbound traffic diversion

Durham Street and College Square North will be temporarily closed to northbound traffic for the duration of the scheme. A signed diversion will take motorists via Grosvenor Road and College Square East.

The department has asked road users to follow temporary signs and allow extra time when travelling through the area. It expects the work to be completed by early March, though that timetable may change.

Link to Grand Central Station

The scheme forms part of the Belfast Cycling Network. Earlier this month, the department allocated £100,000 from its Local Growth Fund capital budget to the Durham Street project to improve cycling connections between Grand Central Station and the northern side of the city centre.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said the scheme was intended to make shorter everyday journeys by walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more attractive. She thanked residents and the public in advance for their cooperation during the works.

Further information is available in the Department for Infrastructure announcement.
