NIFL weekend preview: league action and Windsor Park final face weather threat

The NIFL weekend preview brings together Premiership and Championship action alongside the Women’s Challenge Cup Final at Windsor Park, with Storm Boelo threatening to disrupt the programme.
Portadown host Linfield on Friday evening before Saturday’s fixtures include Crusaders against Coleraine, Bangor against Larne and a Championship meeting between Annagh United and Queen’s University.
Glentoran Women and Cliftonville Ladies are scheduled to contest the Women’s Challenge Cup Final on Saturday evening.
Weather could affect the weekend programme
Some matches may fall foul of the weather, with the Met Office forecasting heavy rain and strengthening winds as Storm Boelo approaches Northern Ireland on Saturday.
The forecast creates the possibility of pitch inspections, postponements and difficult travelling conditions. Supporters should check the latest announcements from clubs, NIFL and the Irish FA before setting off.
Saturday’s evening fixtures, including Bangor against Larne and the Women’s Challenge Cup Final, are scheduled during the period covered by the Northern Ireland wind warning.
Fixtures and kick-off times below remain subject to change.
Linfield visit Portadown before Coleraine head to Seaview
Friday’s Premiership action takes Linfield to Shamrock Park, where Portadown manager David Jeffrey faces his former club.
Linfield enter the weekend two points behind leaders Coleraine, giving the Friday fixture added significance before the Bannsiders visit Crusaders on Saturday.
Glentoran host Ballymena United, while Cliftonville travel to Dungannon Swifts. Carrick Rangers face Limavady United in the other Saturday afternoon fixture.
Bangor and Larne are scheduled to complete the Premiership programme at Clandeboye Park on Saturday evening.
Championship leaders face Queen’s test
Annagh United host Queen’s University in one of Saturday’s key Championship fixtures.
Annagh enter the weekend on 25 points, one ahead of Glenavon and two clear of Newington. Queen’s occupy fourth place on 20 points.
Newington have the opportunity to move above Annagh on Friday evening when they visit Newry City. Strabane Athletic also face Ballinamallard United.
Glenavon travel to Warrenpoint Town on Saturday. The visitors approach the game after a 4–0 league win over H&W Welders, while Warrenpoint’s midweek League Cup victory over Crusaders provides encouragement for the hosts.
Elsewhere, Armagh City host Ards, H&W Welders meet Loughgall, Institute face Dundela and Rathfriland Rangers take on Moyola Park.
Women’s Challenge Cup Final at Windsor Park
Glentoran Women and Cliftonville Ladies meet at the Clearer Twist National Stadium at Windsor Park on Saturday 24 October, with kick-off scheduled for 7.30pm.
Cliftonville are bidding for a third consecutive Women’s Challenge Cup triumph after winning the competition in 2024 and 2025.
Glentoran are its most successful club, with 11 titles, and will aim to add another trophy against opponents who recently secured the Women’s Premiership title.
The Reds won the sides’ final league meeting 4–1 earlier this month, although the final offers Glentoran a fresh opportunity to finish their campaign with silverware.
Glentoran reached the decider by beating Lisburn Ladies 1–0, while Cliftonville defeated Crusaders Strikers 3–0.
BBC Sport NI coverage begins at 7.15pm on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport NI website.
