Justice Minister Naomi Long highlighted the figures during Hate Crime Awareness Week, urging people to challenge hate and support victims.

Hate crime support

Jointly funded by the Department of Justice and PSNI, the service supports victims through the justice process and directs them towards housing, health and psychological assistance.

The increase relates to support referrals, rather than recorded hate crimes.

Proposed protections for victims

Long highlighted two Bills proposing stronger recognition of hostility in criminal offences and additional protections for victims in court.

She encouraged anyone experiencing or witnessing hate crime to report it to police or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
