Richie Murphy’s side appeared destined for defeat after trailing 26-5 at half-time in their United Rugby Championship encounter.

However, a spirited fightback saw Ulster score 21 unanswered points, with Stuart McCloskey crossing for a late try before Jack Murphy converted to secure a share of the points.

Munster dominate opening half

Munster made an impressive start to the interprovincial encounter, with Alex Kendellen opening the scoring after nine minutes.

Jacob Stockdale responded with a try for Ulster, marking his 150th appearance for the province.

However, the visitors quickly regained control.

Marnus van der Merwe crossed from a driving maul before Dan Kelly added another try.

Kendellen then claimed his second shortly before the interval, with JJ Hanrahan converting three of Munster’s four first-half tries to establish a commanding 26-5 advantage.

Ulster’s difficulties were compounded when Cormac Izuchukwu received a yellow card during the opening period.

Ulster launch second-half fightback

The home side began to find their rhythm after the interval.

Stockdale claimed his second try after 53 minutes, with Murphy’s conversion reducing the deficit to 26-12.

Replacement David McCann then powered over with 12 minutes remaining, and another successful conversion brought Ulster within seven points.

Munster had an opportunity to extend their advantage when Charlie O’Shea attempted a penalty from distance, but his effort fell short.

Ulster continued to press and were rewarded when McCloskey crossed following sustained attacking pressure.

Murphy held his nerve to convert, bringing the scores level at 26-26 with just two minutes remaining.

Neither side could find a winning score in the closing stages.

Second successive draw for Ulster

The result means Ulster have now secured consecutive draws in the United Rugby Championship.

Last weekend, Murphy’s side fought back to earn a 33-33 draw away to Glasgow Warriors.

Saturday’s result represents another impressive recovery, although Ulster remain without a victory in their opening three league fixtures.

The province will now turn its attention to its upcoming European and domestic commitments as it looks to build on the resilience demonstrated against Munster.
